In 1770 Captain Cook was the first European to 'discover' Australia when he landed in Botany Bay. In the same year, Joseph Priestly made the arguably equally important discovery when he noticed that a natural plant gum could be used to rub out pencil marks. 1770 is certainly a year to remember.
