Crown shyness observed in some trees

Crown shyness, where trees avoid contact with the canopy-level branches of neighbouring trees of a similar height, is a little understood phenomenon. Most often exhibited by trees of the same species, some scientists consider it to be a consequence of breakages caused by high winds and other violent weather conditions, or a way of halting the spread of leaf-eating insects.
