Show most dogs a tree and they’ll instinctively cock their leg on it. However, researcher Julian Mendel revealed that, because of their highly developed sense of smell, dogs can also detect agricultural diseases, such as laurel wilt, before the symptoms become visible. In Florida, for example, dogs trained to sit when they identify a sick tree are employed to protect the avocado industry from the potentially devastating disease.
