Seeing green at the beach usually is reserved for seaweed or swaying palm trees, which washes ashore. However, Papakolea beach, in Hawaii, is one of the four beaches worldwide that have exceptional natural green sand shores. The Green Sand Beach gets its distinctive colouring from green crystals (olivine) eroded out of the tuff ring. It can only be reached by a spirited downhill hike, but payoffs are really great.
