Volunteers missing their right big toe took part in an unusual study when a Biomedical Egyptology Centre fitted them with prosthetic toes, mimicking those found on two Ancient Egyptian mummies, dated from 600 BC. Although made from an ancient version of papier mache, scientists suspected the prosthetics had been more than merely cosmetic. The volunteers walked well with the aid of their new prosthetics, although the test results do not report whether they opted to keep their Ancient Egyptian-style prosthetics over modern high-tech versions.
