KH-7, initially developed by Spanish jeweller, Jaume Lloreda, to remove grease from precious metal, is named for its chemical composition. "KH" is potassium hydroxide, also commonly known as caustic potash. Naturally corrosive, and reactive towards acids, it is easy to see why the product went on to find wider commercial use. The "7" refers to the number of formulations Lloreda tried, before hitting on the most effective.
