"Proof" rum, set fire to it to test its quality

It's a true fact; Royal Navy's sailors needed to find out if their daily rum portion had been watered down. To check that it was strong enough, they occasionally mixed in gunpowder and set light to it. If it ignited, this was 'proof' that there was sufficient alcohol in their rum. Hence the term 'proof' which is used to describe alcohol content to this day. And if it blasted then they'd have a blast too!
