Fresh watermelon is delicious, but it's also tricky to slice due to its ball-like shape. Storing them in the fridge isn't easy either, so the Japanese created watermelons that are square to solve these issues. To get a cube shape, melons are grown in plastic boxes. Square melons are more practical, but fruit grown like this is inedible because it has to be harvested before they reach full ripeness to maintain the desired shape. It's always so hard to have it all!
