Surfer Garrett McNamara, aged 49!, topped his own world record, riding a wave estimated to be around 100ft, or 30m, high. He managed the feat off the coast of Nazaré, Portugal, an area of the Atlantic known for its monstrous surf. McNamara explained how the incredible waves owe their size and power to a 1,000ft deep underwater canyon, which amplifies even the slightest swell.
