In 2001, doctors diagnosed 19-year-old Maarten van der Weijden with leukaemia and said the promising Dutch swimmer would probably not survive. However a year later he was back in the pool and in 2008 took gold in the 10km swimming marathon at the Beijing Olympics. If this wasn't enough, he has since raised millions in sponsorship for cancer research through a 100-mile swimming challenge.
