Early on, forks were brought by Byzantine princess Theodora, but were seen as "unmanly" and an excessive delicacy. Later on, church would ban them as they said it was an diabolic tool, because human beings already had fingers to eat. On top of this, it was hard to use and beginners hurt their lips and tongue with it. However, the table fork became common in Italy in order to eat pasta more easily. It also became fitting to bring your own fork to a meal. Imagine pulling your own personal fork out at your favorite eatery!
