The desert Wadi al-Hitan in the Sahara, where whales swam

Fossilised whales are not usually expected in the Sahara desert

You wouldn't expect to see a whale in a desert, but in Egypt's Valley of the Whales, there's plenty of evidence to show that they once swam there. Fossilised remains of whales in a place which was once covered by a vast ocean were left high and dry when sea levels dropped to create an arid landscape, offering us a lesson about the world's constant changes.
