Each summer, super-fit runners and hikers gather in a village on the border between France and Spain to compete in a one mile race with a difference. The Milla Vertical d'Areu is run on the second Sunday in June from the village square in Areu to the summit of a neighbouring mountain in the Pyrenees before the shade gets its top. This race is based on a novel which tells the legend about the man that ran faster than the Sun and about the contest among local bachelors to win the first choice of girls at a dance that evening.
