We all know that it's very serious when babies are born prematurely. But Dr Alan Flake’s team have been working on a surprising solution to this problem – they have built an artificial womb which is filled with fluid, which gives the babies the opportunity of delaying the moment of starting breathing oxygen from the air, which therefore means more time to develop their organs. At the moment, they have tested this in fetal lambs, which are remarkably similar to baby humans.
