Certain species of ants are known to self-medicate when infected by particular types of fungi. The ants deliberately eat foods high in hydrogen peroxide, a substance healthy ants choose to avoid. Research shows that infected ants who consume the hydrogen peroxide-rich foodstuffs have lower mortality rates from the fungal infection than those who continue to avoid anything containing that chemical.
