Achatina achatina, or the Giant African Land Snail, is the world's largest snail. Reaching 30cm in length, with shell diameters of up to 15cm, they are prized as pets. They have gone native in Florida, where they are considered a pest species due to the effect of their gargantuan appetites on crops and ecosystems. However, they remain an important source of protein for some forest-dwelling West African tribal groups.
