How spitting snakes shoot for the eyes

Keep your distance or it might blind you

Spitting snakes have an exceptional ability to squirt out venom into the eyes of potential attackers and blind them. When provoked or threatened, the spitting serpents contract the muscles of their venom sacs and force out venom through the holes at the tip of the fangs. Fortunately, the fangs do not have a movable nozzle for fine-tuned aiming, but the holes are narrow and teardrop shaped allowing a stream of venom to be sprayed at high speed. Worryingly, spitting snakes can hit their targets with impressive frequency, like 100% accuracy from 60 cm!
