Defence mechanisms employed by plants to prevent insects and other animals from eating them are many and varied. A study by John Orrock and Brian Connolly reveals one of the strangest: plants that respond to predation by forcing their caterpillar predators to adopt cannibalistic behaviour. The plants do so by emitting foul-tasting chemicals, which make eating the foliage less attractive for the caterpillars than munching on each other.
