Optogenetics could very well be the next "bright" idea. This process uses the power of light to stimulate certain nerve cells within the brain. Not only can optogenetics be used to map neural networks, but other exciting applications include helping scientists understand specific behavioural patterns and even treating those with macular degeneration (the most common form of blindness). Indeed, the future of this research looks bright.
