Parade with living people carried in coffins

  • Parade in Santa Marta de Ribarteme
Not the traditional parade

Glad to be alive? Climb Into a coffin! Every July 29 the village of Las Nieves in Northern Spain hosts an amazing parade of living people borne along the streets in coffins. The people climb into the coffins to give thanks to Saint Martha for saving them from death by illness or accident in the previous year and while some think it's morbid, villagers believe it's life-affirming (especially when they exit the coffins and carry on partying!).
