The latest survey of the World Life Cost puts Paris in second place in the list of the most expensive cities.
The report organized by the Intelligence Unit of The Economist magazine is biannual and ranks 131 cities worldwide amongst the most expensive and the cheapest. Paris upgraded six places from the previous report, reflecting a recovery in European prices.
To get an idea of its cost of living, here are listed some basic products price. Regarding food, a gallon of milk will cost about 0.60 €, 1kg of apples about 2.00 €, a beer costs about 4 € and a Coke €1.60. A baguette costs 1.10 € and 1.38 € for a pack of gum.
Regarding hygiene products, shower gel costs 1 € and a 58 diapers package would cost 20 €. Paris has the most expensive restaurant sector as a coffee costs 1.10 €, and latte for 3.30 € and a drink for 3.50 €. A standard dish, for example steak and chips, has a price of 10 €. If you go out for drinks, it will not cost you less than 18 € in any bar while a pack of cigarettes is about 5 €.
When it comes to leisure activities, prices don’t fall behind either. A movie ticket costs 10 € and tickets to museums range from 32 € for 2 days to 64 € for 6 days. Public transportation is not cheap. A ticket for only one train journey costs 1.60 € and 10 trips cost 12 €.
Renting a 2 bedroom apartment in a lower-middle area is about 900 € a month and the rent for only one bedroom in the same area is around 400 € a month. Recently, the French government announced an increase of 3.05% of the minimum wage, placing it at 1,254.28 €.
