Tokyo is the most populated metropolitan area with a total of 39,400,000 inhabitants. With an area of 13,555 km2 it has a density of 14,000 persons per square kilometer.
Tokyo is Japan’s capital and is located in the Kanto region. It is currently the center of politics, economy, education, communication and culture. It is also the city where you find most of the corporate headquarters, financial institutions, universities, colleges, and theaters in Japan. The city is divided into 23 districts, one district and four sub-prefectures.
Its large population is due to the fact that Tokyo is the Japanese city that offers more jobs and recreation centres. These attract many people, especially young aged. 97% of the population is Japanese but we can also find minority ethnic groups such as Chinese and Korean. As for religion, in Tokyo we can find Buddhism, Shintoism and other religions. In Tokyo we can also find syncretism, which consists in practicing two or more religions. Consequently, Buddhism, Shinto and Christians coexist in the same society.
The increased population occurred because they have a very high birth rate and very low mortality. Nonetheless, the industrial development also helped with the increase in population. After World War II, the birth rate ratio decreased, leading it to the modern demographic model. From there, the population increase was due to natural increase, since migration is marginal. But do not forget that economic development has been faster than the population, leading to obvious symptoms of aging.
Earlier, the inhabitants of Tokyo were living in houses of one or two floors made of wood, each one with its own garden, patio and religious chapel. Due to the increasing in population, the demand for residences grew. Consequently, they demolished rural houses and started building large buildings for families to live there. These apartments are designed for a family with two adults and two or three children. Despite increasing the number of homes, demand was still outstripping supply, causing an increase in land prices and rent, and forcing many people to leave Tokyo around 1970. These people moved to Tama, where the government built affordable housing for low-income families. But not all were benefits for the people of Tama, since they are quite far from the capital and have to spend more than four hours to travel to their place of work and back home.
Like many Asian countries, the population distribution is very uneven. Most people are focused on the big megalopolis, with 77% of the total population living in the city center. To avoid large concentrations in Tokyo, a group of scientists at the Shimizu Corporation have designed a 2km pyramid known as the mega pyramid that could be built in Tokyo Bay that would house more than 750,000 people. They are currently developing all the necessary materials, like carbon nanotubes, and all the technology associated to make the mega pyramid happen.
