Patek Philippe’s 1943 is the name that one of the most expensive watches in the world receives. The famous Patek Philippe designed it and it was sold for 4 million euros in an auction sale that took place in Genève in 2010.
Not to be surprised, Patek Philippe designed 9 out of the 10 most expensive watches. He started his own company in Genève, but since 1951 he had been designing watches for Queen Victoria. Other important clients that Patek Philippe had were Pope Pio IX, the King and Queen of Denmark, Saddam Hussein…
It is believed that the watch started to be got together in 1943 (and therefore, its name), but it wasn’t finished until 1944. Officially, it was sold for the first time on August 22nd 1946. It is said that the watch 1943 has so much power and value behind it because of being “out of époque”. Everyone who understands how the technology of watches went is surprised as how a watched designed in the middle of the II WW can have such an advanced technology and how accurate it can be. For this reason and the amount of precious stones that it has, it’s nowadays the third most expensive watch ever sold.
After being sold in the auction sale that took place in Genève in 2010, the 1943 was then exposed at a Swiss Museum. This watch also has special functions, such as: Chronograph, lunar phase calendar… Furthermore, its cover is made of gold and 18 carat. It also has other 23 incrusted precious stones, bimetallic compensation and Arabic gold numbers. As an interesting fact, the hands are designed in such a way that they look as a train rail. The dial is silvered-coloured and it’s 37 mm. long, the longest one for the watches that belong to that period.
