Pirates may well have had more eye injuries than the average fellow, but that's not the real reason behind their eyepatch prevalence. Ever noticed how vision takes a few minutes to adapt to see in darkness? Pirates attacking ships knew this too, and to gain an advantage the eyepatch was used to pre-acclimatise one eye to darkness, so the eyepatch could be removed below decks on an unfamiliar ship allowing instant vision.
