The rugged Whanganui, which flows through the beautiful landscape of New Zealand's North Island, is not your average river. In fact, for the local tribespeople, it's a part of the family. Under the terms of a 2017 treaty, and after more than 150 claiming for it, the Whanganui Maori, who regard the river as their ancestor, won the legal fight to have it granted the same legal rights as a living person.
