Wombat

  • Wombats are special in many ways, as well as their poos

Wombats poo cube shapes

It may sound strange but wombat poo is actually cube-shaped just like a dice but picking it up and rolling it is not recommended. This is because, like many animals, wombats use their droppings to mark territory and an evolutionary quirk has found that a flat-sided shape means the poop will remain where it is dropped making for a more effective marking system.

Why you shouldn’t challenge a wombat to a race

Wombats are cuddly looking creatures, with round tubby bodies and short stumpy legs. You might expect them to waddle around pretty slowly, but surprisingly, a wombat can run as fast as 40 kmph. Unless you are a top athlete like Ursain Bolt, who can sprint at 45 kmph, it’s pretty unlikely that you would be able to reach the finish line before a wombat does.

Hard bottomed wombats

The closest living relative of the koala is the wombat. Rather than climb trees, wombats are small burrowing marsupials that sometimes defend their burrows with their own bottoms. They can do so because they have no tail for a predator to grab and a bottom too hard to be bitten. If the intruder insists to chase it, the wombat might kick it with its hind legs and crush it against the ceiling of the burrow. Such a temper!
