When HMS Discovery set anchor in Hawaii in 1778, Captain Cook was greeted warmly by the inhabitants of the island he had named Sandwich. Cook had been the most influential cartographer to have ever lived as he also had discovered Australia. But this cut no ice with the feisty Hawaiians on his next visit, when an angry mob clubbed him to death and ate him.
