In the year 75 BCE, Julius Caesar himself was kidnapped by pirates while sailing on the Aegean Sea. According to historical scholars such as Plutarch, the pirates asked for 20 "talents" of silver (roughly the modern equivalent of £410,000 pounds). However, Caesar was insulted by such a "small" ransom. He instead demanded that they raise their figure to 50 talents of silver.
