Ever been tempted to try your fate through the gates of hell? No, most of us would not – even the non-believers. But in the ancient world this was a common ritual that was performed throughout the Mediterranean. Famous was the Ploutonium door at Hierapolis through which priests would lead sacrificial animals who would die due to a strong concentration of heavy CO2 gas near the ground, while priests breathed the air at higher height.
