The smoldering volcano of Kawah Ijen is located in the volcanic islands of East Java, Indonesia. The picturesque blue crater lake is not so idyllic, containing acidic waters that can dissolve clothes and even flesh. The turquoise blue of the volcano contrasts starkly with the bright yellow of the adjacent sulfur mine, whilst noxious sulfur clouds close the access paths when the fumes are dense.
