The red-lipped batfish is named for its bright red lips. Standing in striking contrast to the greyish-brown body, they give the impression that the fish has its own tube of lipstick. Given that the fish share a habitat with a number of other batfish, the vividly-coloured lips are thought to help members of the species recognise each other during spawning.
