The RMS Queen Mary, which belongs to the company Cunard Line, proudly
displays its 345m length. Since the Queen Mary 2 is too large to dock in many
ports, the lifeboats are also used as ferries to carry passengers from and to the ship
port.
Inside the ship we can find the theater called "Illuminations" as well as a
planetarium, the only one currently on a boat. Other interesting things we can find
on the ship are the spa, gym (2.325m2), mini golf, tennis court, basketball court...
we can even a kennel that can accommodate a total of 12 dogs and 12 cats. The
restaurants on board are assigned according to the type of accommodation you
purchased, meaning that not everyone can go to the high-class restaurants.
With an outer surface of 14.164m2, there’s enough space to find a bunch of
different unique facilities like 5 different pools, four of them outdoors and one of
them even has a retractable roof. The ship also has an art collection valued at $5
million, a museum about maritime history, a nightclub, a theater, an auditorium
and even a casino. All of them make this cruise ship one of the most luxurious in
the world.
The shipyard Alstom Chantiers de l’Atlantique in Saint-Nazaire, France, built the
RMS Queen Mary. The project was based on the construction of a cruise ship that
would complement the already known RMS Queen Elizabeth 2. To build it took
3,000 workers, although a total of 20,000 people were directly or indirectly
involved in its design, construction and equipment. 128 artists from 16 different
countries created the interior design. In total, these workers spent about eight
million hours to make this boat and needed 300,000 pieces of steel.
Its port of registry was Southampton (UK) until 2011 and nowadays is the
Hamilton, Bermuda. It was first launched on September 25, 2003 and its cost was
more than $800 million, becoming the most expensive ocean liner built in
maritime history.
Overall, it has a length of 345m, a width of 41m, a depth of 10m and a weight of
150,000 tons. It has a total of 17 decks and a capacity of 117mW. Its maximum
speed at sea is 30 knots (56km/h), although its average service speed is 28 knots
(51km/h). Surprisingly, the horn has a tone that could be listened up to 10 nautical
miles away (about 19km away). Its power plant, which has 2,500 km of electrical
cable, 3,000 telephones and 25.000m2 of carpet, could supply a city of 250,000
inhabitants. With a crew of 1,253 members, it has a maximum capacity of 2,620
passengers, which can be accommodated, in 1,310 different cabins. 920 of them
enjoy sea views, while 293 are indoor and 97 are suites.
