Way back in 1940 the Tacoma Narrows Bridge spanning Puget Sound in Washington State suffered one of the worst and at the time most surprising structural failures of its kind. Even though the winds which caused the collapse were only around 65km/h, the concrete and steel bridge still ended up twisting like a tornado before collapsing into the waters below.
