After 17 years of construction, the 57.1km long and 2.3km deep Gotthard rail tunnel opens in 2016 to a lavish ceremony. It will revolutionise freight travel, taking a million lorries a year off the road. The 28 million tonnes of excavated rock was used in the building of the tunnel and copper cable that would span 3,200km lines the tunnel walls.
