Looking rather like an escapee from the age of the dinosaurs, the Shoebill's most distinguishing feature is its large, bulging bill. A stork-like bird, it lives in central and eastern African swamps and marshes, and uses its enormous bill to target prey larger than anything that most other wading birds can take. Favourite prey includes lungfish, water snakes and even baby crocodiles.
