Like so many species, the axolotl faces extinction because their habitat is being polluted by humans. However, fortunately their wide smile has made them popular domestic pets and the incredible ability of this amphibious relative of the salamander to regrow injured limbs has given this critically endangered species a new home in medical research facilities all over the world.
